The Need for Safe Music
"What's the big deal?" You might be wondering what
we're talking about with this "Safe Music" idea.
We have seen a big change in the music that has been created
over the last 10 years. Instead of having to be
careful not to play a handful of songs that have
really explicit lyrics (generally cursing), we now
have to be concerned with 40% to 50%
of current popular songs having some level of inappropriate
and/or explicit lyrics. It's not always cursing that
is the problem. Generally, cursing is cleaned up in
the music that professional DJ's have. It's really
more about the subject of the song. We believe it is
inappropriate to play songs for our younger audiences that
promote violence, sexual promiscuity, use of alcohol or
drugs, the degradation of women, and other generally
antisocial behavior. We believe that most of our
clients, once educated, will share our concern and want to
have input in what messages are being sent through the music
played during their events.
To
give you some idea of the extent of the problem we're
facing, click on each of the links below to view the lyrics
of some of the popular songs being played on the airwaves
today and over the past several years. Please
understand that most of the cursing is removed in "radio
versions" that professional DJ's have in their music
libraries. The content, however, is another matter as
the subject of many of these songs simply cannot be changed.
(Caution! Some of the lyrics in the songs below will
be offensive to some viewers.)
